In my novel, Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell, Eleanor's mother is in an unhealthy relationship with her new husband, Richie. Richie sometimes hits Eleanor's mother. When Eleanor and her three other siblings hear Richie and their mother arguing, they al, huddle together without calling the police because Eleanor now believes that "seemed like something a child would do, or a fool."
I think that many children and women in those situations are scared to call the police because they're afraid the abuser will possibly even kill them for doing such thing. I've read books and seen movies about abusive relationships, and many don't survive them. I think it's a huge tragedy because no one deserves to be beaten for no reason at all. And sometimes people don't even realize how bad their abusive spouse is and I think that's the saddest part because they will keep forgiving the person they love and continue to make excuses for them.
